Guidance, Navigation, and Controls Engineer


Masten Space Systems is a Mojave, California based rocket company that builds reliable and reusable rocket powered vehicles.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced, test-oriented Guidance, Navigation, and Controls Engineer to develop, test, and serve as an operator for our reusable VTVL rocket vehicles. You will support both internal vehicle/engine development projects and client flight operations, often as the sole flight code developer and custodian for the vehicle(s) you are assigned.

For each vehicle, you will work closely with the launch coordinator and a small team of technicians and ground crew to plan, prepare for, and execute a variety of vehicle tests, including:

  • Trailer tests (engine testing/development)
  • Static chaindown vehicle firings (engine integration, characterization, and debugging)
  • Tethered flight testing
  • Freeflight testing



  • Work with vehicle launch coordinators to perform routine vehicle maintenance and debugging
  • Work with clients to design vehicle/payload software interfaces, tethered and freeflight test sequences, and flight trajectories that meet client test needs
  • Update and maintain vehicle simulation models
  • Configure, run, and analyze flight simulations
  • Anticipate, identify, and mitigate potential software/electrical failure modes and testing risks
  • Develop and configure vehicle software for flight
  • Serve as console operator during vehicle and trailer tests
  • Perform postflight analysis and debugging


Desired Skills

  • Experience developing and testing real-time embedded systems
  • Experience with real-time and/or safety-critical software development
  • Familiarity with sensors and actuators, including GPS, IMUs, pressure and temperature sensors, solenoids, and servos
  • Experience with Linux, GNU toolchain, Python, MATLAB/Simulink code generation, real-time operating systems, IP networking


Desired Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in computer science, cognitive science, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, or related field
  • 3+ years of vehicle/system development and testing experience
  • Experience with hazardous and real-time flight or test operations
  • Experience developing flight software and fabricating flight hardware/electronics
  • Strong software development skills, particularly in C and Python
